Location

The Forres Park Landfill is located east of the Solomon Hochoy Highway, at the Claxton Bay exit.

Size

22 hectares (55 acres)

MSW

This landfill receives municipal solid waste generated in the south central areas of the island. The waste is collected from residential and urban communities that fall within the municipalities of Chaguanas, San Fernando, Point Fortin, Penal/Debe, Princes Town, and Siparia.

Commercial

The site also receives waste from haulage contractors serving business organizations.  Regular waste is landfilled while ‘special’ waste types receive pre-disposal or containment treatment to render them harmless.

Average Waste Tonnage Received

Approx. 300 tonnes per day.

History

SWMCOL established the Forres Park Landfill in 1983 to cater to the disposal needs of south central Trinidad. Unlike the Beetham and Guanapo sites, Forres Park was chosen as an ideal location for landfilling due to its underlying layer of clay that would act as a barrier to the infiltration of leachate into groundwater; the availability of adequate cover material; and its distance from existing residential communities. A leachate collection system, comprised of a network of pipelines below the landfill, diverts the leachate into a collection pond, thereby further safeguarding groundwater and nearby ecosystems.

Current and Future Plans

SWMCOL’s strategic environmental sustainability plans include the establishment of an Integrate Sustainable Solid Waste Facility that includes a state-of-the-art engineered landfill fed by satellite transfer stations and material resource recovery facilities (MRFs) for the sorting and diversion of recyclable wastes.
