Following the success of a 2016 pilot curbside recycling initiative in partnership with the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation, SWMCOL has been pursuing similar partnerships with municipal corporations across the country with the objective of transforming citizens’ attitude towards waste disposal to one that is eco-friendlier.
The initiative is being expanded to communities on a phased basis and is targeting the single stream collection of post-consumer beverage containers (i.e., glass and plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and tetra-pak cartons). To date, pilot phases of the MCRP have been successfully launched in Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo, San Fernando, Arima, Port of Spain, Princes Town, Sangre Grande and Siparia. Post-pilot assessments will determine the long-term feasibility and future phased expansion of the programme in each municipality.
