What is Wastewater?

Wastewater refers to any water that has been fouled by use, or water that is no longer fit for human consumption following its use in various processes.  This includes water that is discharged from households, office and retail buildings, industrial plants and manufacturing process, and agricultural facilities.

The treatment of wastewater is essential for the protection of public health, preventing pollution of our waterways and thus protecting downstream users and aquatic life.

SWMCOL has over 30 years’ experience in the wastewater industry. We have the technical staff and support equipment required for the assessment, maintenance, operation and refurbishment of these wastewater systems to ensure that they meet the parameters set out by the EMA’s Water Pollution Rules (2002; amended 2006).

Routine maintenance is essential. Poor maintenance of sewerage systems, i.e., underground lines, manholes, lift stations – leads to blockages and backup problems, even within the plumbing fixtures at basement and ground level. Release of untreated or poorly treated wastewater causes:

• Nuisance odours
• Oxygen depletion that can lead to loss of aquatic life
• Release of disease-causing micro-organisms, e.g., cholera, dysentery, etc.
• Excessive algae growth in waterways
